Everyone believed the judge would split five little siblings apart that morning. 

Then a soft-spoken carpenter rose, and one painful truth transformed the courtroom in ways nobody had imagined coming.

The corridor of the family courthouse smelled of aged paper and floor wax.

It was the sort of smell that stayed on your clothes long after you walked outside.

I sat on a stiff wooden bench with sawdust still dusting the seams of my boots and a borrowed tie sitting awkwardly around my throat.

Opposite me, five small children sat in a line that looked far too orderly for their ages.

Eli, the oldest at six, gently wiped his little sister’s cheeks using the edge of his shirt.
