For 4 years my parents told everyone I “disappeared” after I stopped sending money home.

There’s a house in Asheville, North Carolina, with a robin’s-egg blue front door. I painted it myself the week we moved in—three coats with a cheap brush in good light. The final coat went on the day I stopped apologizing.
