Mom slowly stood.
“Where did you get that?”
“Chloe, honey, whatever’s in there, maybe we should…”
“Grandma, look,” she said, opening it.
Mom’s hands trembled as she reached toward the bag.
I moved closer, expecting exactly what every suspicious daughter would expect.
Lipstick.
Hotel receipts.
Photographs of another woman.
Something ugly.
Instead, Mom’s hand flew to her mouth.
“Oh, my God!”
Inside were old family photographs with worn edges.
A small wooden music box with faded paint.
And a stack of laminated cards printed in large letters beside pictures of ordinary objects.
A spoon.
A comb.
A smiling man’s face labeled “son.”
On top was another laminated card written carefully by hand:
“My name is Evelyn. Richard is my son. I am safe with him.”
Chloe wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
“Grandma, that’s not even the worst part. I saw who he takes this to.”
Then she began speaking quickly.
“I asked Cindy, my best friend’s sister, to come wait outside so we could follow Richard’s car. He drove south to that memory care facility. He left the tote on the passenger seat and ran inside. The door wasn’t even locked.”
My expression must have alarmed her because she immediately added, “I’ll give it back, I swear. I saw an aide wave him in, as if he lives there. There’s a cot, Mom. A folded cot next to a hospital bed.”
Grace pressed the laminated card to her chest.
“Evelyn,” she whispered. “He’s mentioned she’s his mother, but didn’t tell me more.”
She grabbed her coat.
“Avery, drive. Now. And don’t lecture me about seatbelts; I’ll put it on.”
We found Richard inside a small room at the memory care facility.
He sat beside a tiny elderly woman, holding her hand while slowly reading from one of the picture cards.
When he looked up and saw us, all the color drained from his face.
“Grace, please! I was going to tell you! My last partner left when she found out. I couldn’t. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Mom walked past him and sat beside the bed.
Richard looked down.
“My mom is 86 and has dementia. It gets really bad after dark. She becomes disoriented, and the only way to calm her down is for me to be right here. I’ve been sleeping here for months. That’s why you’ve never seen my house. There’s barely a house to see.”
After months of suspicious excuses, the real answer turned out to be the gentlest possibility none of us had considered.
Mom looked at him.
“Richard. You don’t have to choose between taking care of your mother and loving me.”
Evelyn turned toward Grace and studied her carefully.
“Are you the pretty lady my Richard keeps telling me about?”
Mom laughed through her tears.
“That’s me.”
A few weeks later, Sunday dinners moved to 5 p.m.
On Evelyn’s better days, Richard brought her along.
Chloe, still embarrassed about the “borrowed” leather tote, appointed herself official keeper of the picture cards.
Mom managed to repair Evelyn’s old music box, and its soft melody played while I set the dinner table.
I had been so certain Richard was lying.
And technically, he was.
But he wasn’t hiding another woman.
He was protecting the story of the one person who needed his love just as much as my mother did.
