My Daughter Was Rejected by 20 Families Because of Her Diagnosis—I Signed the Adoption Papers in Less Than 4 Minutes

After 4 months, I was approved to be considered for a placement. Only then was I allowed to review a limited profile and meet the little girl under supervision.

Tessa brought me into a small room at the care center. A moment later, an aide entered carrying a toddler in a yellow sleeper.

“This is Sophie,” Tessa said.

Sophie had dark hair sticking up on 1 side and only 1 sock. She studied me with enormous brown eyes.

When the aide placed her in my arms, Sophie grabbed my collar and held on. Then she turned her face toward the window.

That was when I saw the pale brown birthmark high on her left cheek.

My breath caught.

Lila had possessed an almost identical mark in the same place. At 19, she used to cover it with makeup because she hated it. I would kiss that spot and tell her it was my favorite part of her face.

“Are you all right?” Tessa asked.

“Yes,” I whispered. “She reminds me of someone.”

Sophie reached for my chin, and a terrible possibility entered my mind.

The agency could not reveal her biological parents’ identities at that stage, so after the meeting, I drove to Judith’s house.

The grass was overgrown, 1 shutter hung crooked, and empty cans stood beside the recycling bin. Judith looked decades older than I remembered when she opened the door.

“Judith, it’s Caleb.”

Recognition slowly crossed her face.

“You heard about Lila.”

“I only found out yesterday.” I took a breath. “I also met a little girl in Colfax. Her name is Sophie, and she has Lila’s birthmark.”

Judith gripped the doorframe.

“You saw her?”

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“She’s Lila’s daughter, isn’t she?”

Judith began to cry.

“Yes.”

Inside, we sat at the same kitchen table where Lila and I had once done our homework.

Judith told me that Lila had become involved with a restaurant manager named Travis. He remained with her during the pregnancy, but after doctors warned of possible complications, he began pulling away.

Lila di:ed during childbirth.

When tests confirmed that Sophie had Down syndrome, Travis said he could not handle her needs. Within weeks, he voluntarily relinquished his parental rights and disappeared.

“And you refused custody?” I asked.

Judith looked at the open bottle on her counter.

“I’m still drinking, Caleb. Sophie needs appointments, therapy, routine, and stability. I couldn’t give Lila those things. Why should I pretend I can give them to her daughter?”

“You could get help.”

“I’ve tried before. Until I can stay sober, taking Sophie would only give me another child to fail.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Refusing custody may be the 1st responsible thing I’ve done in years.”

Before leaving, I asked where Lila was buried.

Her grave stood beneath a maple tree at the edge of town. I sat beside it until the afternoon light began to fade.

“I thought about calling you a thousand times,” I whispered. “I always believed there would be more time.”

I told her about Sophie’s yellow sleeper, missing sock, tiny hand, and familiar birthmark.

“She’s beautiful, Lila.”

Then I made a promise.

“If they let me, I’ll make sure she has someone who stays.”

Once I reached the appropriate stage of the placement process, the agency confirmed Sophie’s family history, including Lila’s identity and Travis’s relinquishment of parental rights.

I immediately asked to be considered specifically for Sophie.

The next 4 months brought more inspections, interviews, medical training, and supervised visits. I found a pediatrician experienced with Down syndrome and contacted physical, occupational, and speech therapists.

My social worker, Marissa, questioned every part of my plan.

During 1 interview, she asked, “Are you doing this because of Lila?”

“Partly,” I admitted. “Lila is why I walked through the door. Sophie is why I’m staying.”

By then, Sophie recognized me whenever I visited. She loved peekaboo, hated peas, and pulled off her socks whenever no one was looking. Her laugh began as a quiet breath before taking over her entire body.

Almost 8 months after I first contacted the agency, my pre-adoptive placement was approved.

Marissa placed a thick packet in front of me.

“These are not the final adoption papers,” she reminded me. “They authorize Sophie to live with you while the legal process continues.”

My attorney and I had already reviewed every page.

I signed without hesitation.

When I finished, Marissa looked at the clock.

“That took less than 4 minutes.”

“I’ve had 8 months to decide,” I said. “Today, I only needed to sign my name.”

That afternoon, I brought Sophie home.

The following year was exhausting and wonderful. There were medical appointments, therapy sessions, sleepless nights, and paperwork everywhere. Some mornings, I joined client calls with mashed banana on my shirt.

Once, Sophie emptied an entire box of tissues onto the bathroom floor and sat in the middle of them laughing. I took a picture before cleaning up.

For years, my parents’ house had been silent. Now toys covered the hallway, plastic cups crowded the kitchen, and tiny socks appeared in impossible places.

I had not realized how lonely I was until I wasn’t lonely anymore.

Judith was permitted supervised visits whenever she was sober. During the 1st, she sat stiffly on the couch until Sophie crawled over, pulled herself up against her knees, and reached for her.

Judith began to cry.

“She doesn’t know I don’t deserve that.”

“She isn’t thinking about what you deserve,” I said. “She only knows you’re here.”

Soon afterward, Judith entered treatment. She relapsed once, then returned to the program. I could not promise Sophie that her grandmother would remain sober forever, but I could show her that people were capable of trying again.

Nearly 1 year after Sophie came home, we went to court.

The judge asked whether I understood that adoption was permanent and whether I accepted every responsibility of becoming Sophie’s father.

“Yes,” I answered both times.

Then she signed the final order.

Sophie legally became my daughter.

Evan waited outside the courthouse.

“I still wonder whether my wife and I should have been braver,” he admitted.

“You made the decision you believed you could live with.”

“That doesn’t make it right.”

“No,” I said. “But admitting you weren’t prepared was better than bringing her home and resenting her for needing you.”

Sophie reached for him and wrapped her hand around 1 of his fingers.

“She’s happy,” he said.

“Very—unless someone serves her peas.”

That weekend, I took Sophie to Lila’s grave.

She could walk by then, although only for a few determined steps before sitting wherever gravity chose. We placed flowers beside the headstone and spread a blanket beneath the maple tree.

Sophie climbed into my lap while I read her favorite book. She kept trying to turn 3 pages at once.

“One at a time,” I told her.

She giggled.

I looked at Lila’s name.

Sophie had not erased my grief, nor was she meant to. She was not a replacement for her mother or a way to repair my past.

She was her own person.

Her own life.

Her own joy.

I touched the birthmark on her cheek.

“Someday, I’ll tell you everything about your mom,” I whispered. “I’ll tell you how brave she was and how much she would have loved you.”

Sophie grabbed the book from my hands, apparently more interested in the next page than the past.

I laughed and kissed her forehead.

When it was time to leave, she held 1 of my fingers as we walked toward the car.

“Come on, kiddo,” I said. “Let’s go home.”

Sophie looked up at me and smiled.
