“I owe you an apology,” I said.

“At first it did,” Adrian said.
“Yes. Then I got comfortable having separate worlds.”
He nodded.
“I could be myself with you,” I said. “Then go home and become whatever version of me they expected.”
“That sounds exhausting.”
“It was.”

“Do you want it?” I asked.
“Maybe.”
That word scared me more than yes.
“Were you going to accept?”

“Then what?”
“I was waiting to see if there was still room for us to make decisions together.”
The sentence hurt because it was fair.
“I never hid you because I was ashamed of you,” I said. “I was ashamed of myself.”
Adrian took my hand.
“Let’s stop making decisions based on people who aren’t in our marriage.”
We agreed not to decide immediately.
That itself felt like progress.
PART 10: Brunch and the Letters
The next morning, I went to brunch because I chose to.
Not because Sophie asked.
I entered the hotel dining room with Adrian beside me. Conversation softened, but no one laughed.
Graham stood.
For one second, I expected another performance.
Instead, he said, “Morning.”
Breakfast began painfully normally.
Coffee.
Eggs.
Wedding stories.
Then Graham tapped his glass.
I stiffened.
Sophie looked at him sharply.
He set the spoon down.
“No speech.”
A few people smiled.
Then he looked at me.
“I owe my daughter an apology.”
The room went quiet.
“What happened last night was not funny,” he said. “I embarrassed Clara because I thought making people laugh mattered more than considering why they were laughing.”
No excuses.
No “if anyone was offended.”
“I’ve apparently done versions of that for years,” he continued. “I also interfered in communication between my daughters. That was wrong.”
I wanted to believe him.
That frightened me.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me today,” he said.
“Okay.”
“I would like the chance to understand what I’ve done.”
“That will take time.”
“I know.”
There was no hug.
No instant repair.
That made it feel more real.
Later, Elaine pulled me aside.
“I found something at home.”
“What?”
“Your grandmother’s letters.”
My fingers went cold.
“I never received letters.”
“I know.”
She handed me a thin bundle tied with faded blue ribbon.
The top envelope was addressed in my grandmother’s handwriting.
For Clara. Personal.
The postmark was twelve years old.
The first envelope had already been opened.

Inside was a letter from a woman I had loved deeply.
