My mother-in-law prepared a Christmas room for everyone except me.

PART 3 

Lucas came upstairs behind me.

“You don’t really need a hotel.”

I placed two sweaters back inside my suitcase.

“I know.”

“Then why are you reserving one?”

“Because every other choice begins with me solving this for everybody.”

He sat on the edge of his childhood bed.

“We could both sleep here.”

“Your mother will feel rejected.”

“So?”

“You’ll spend the evening trying to make her feel better.”

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

That wasn’t an accusation.

It was a prediction built on seven Christmases.

Rosemary appeared in the doorway.

“I am right here.”

Fair.

I zipped my suitcase.

She asked:

“Are you angry with me?”

“Yes.”

Her expression changed.

I don’t think she expected a simple answer.

“Because I put you downstairs?”

“Because you chose what I wanted without asking me.”

“I thought I knew.”

“I know.”

That was the difficult part.

Rosemary wasn’t standing there taking pleasure in excluding me.

She genuinely believed she knew me.

And some of what she believed had come from me.

I had spent years presenting flexibility as a personality trait.

Whatever works.

I’m fine.

Don’t worry about me.

Give it to somebody who needs it.

Eventually, everyone stopped checking whether I still meant it.

Rosemary crossed her arms.

“I thought the kitchen was something we shared.”

“It was.”

“Was?”

“Is.”

She looked puzzled.

I sat on my suitcase.

“I like making breakfast with you.”

“Then what are we fighting about?”

“The part where enjoying something turned into owning it.”

That landed.

Rosemary glanced toward the stairs.

Then at Lucas.

“You told me she wouldn’t care.”

Lucas rubbed his forehead.

“I thought she wouldn’t.”

“Because?”

He looked at me.

“Because Cassie never cares about this stuff.”

I said:

“I care.”

He nodded.

“Apparently.”

Not defensive.

Just uneasy.

I realized my anger toward Rosemary had found somewhere easier to land than my anger toward him.

She had arranged the room.

But Lucas had helped his family define me for years.

Cassie’s easygoing. Cassie won’t mind.

Cassie will help. Cassie can use the den.

He didn’t say those things because he disliked me.

He said them because my flexibility made his life incredibly convenient.

I asked:

“When your mother called about rooms, did she ask what we wanted?”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell her?”

He looked embarrassed.

“Whatever’s easiest.”

I laughed.

I couldn’t stop it.

He heard it too.

My sentence.

Borrowed.

Spoken on my behalf.

Rosemary sat next to him.

“So what do you actually want?”

It was an embarrassingly difficult question.

I glanced around.

“I want to sleep in the same room as my husband.”

Lucas nodded.

“Good start.”

“And I don’t want to wake up at five-thirty.”

Rosemary looked genuinely offended.

“The casserole has to go in by six-fifteen.”

“Then someone else can put it in.”

Silence.

From downstairs, Kara shouted:

“I heard that. Absolutely not.”

I laughed again.

Rosemary nearly did.

Then she said:

“Seven?”

“Seven-thirty.”

“Seven-fifteen.”

“Fine.”

Apparently, we had started negotiating.

I still went to the hotel.

That surprised them both.

Lucas asked if he should come.

I told him that was his choice.

He came.

Not because I needed some public display that he chose his wife over his mother.

I would’ve hated that too.

He came because married people usually sleep in the same place on Christmas Eve after spending seven hours driving there together.

The hotel was eight minutes away.

Ordinary beige carpet.

Tiny artificial tree in the lobby.

A receptionist wearing reindeer earrings.

Our room had two water bottles, four pillows, and no emotional history connected to the bed.

Lucas placed our suitcase on the luggage rack.

Then said:

“I messed this up.”

“Yeah.”

“I honestly thought you enjoyed doing all the helping.”

“I do.”

He sat down in the desk chair.

“You’re making this complicated.”

“It is complicated.”

That was what our family had overlooked.

I could enjoy helping and still want a bed.

I could love Rosemary and resent being assigned to her kitchen.

I could be flexible without volunteering for a permanent last place.

Lucas asked:

“Why do you always say you’re fine?”

I looked at him.

“Because most of the time I am.”

“That’s not helpful.”

“I didn’t know I was creating a permanent policy.”

He smiled faintly.

Then I considered the question more seriously.

My mother had raised three kids on a tight budget after my father left.

There was always somebody with a more immediate need.

My little brother needed braces.

My sister needed tutoring.

Mom needed overtime.

I learned young that being the child who needed little was useful.

Nobody forced me to become that person.

People rewarded it.

“You’re such an easy kid.”

“Thank God Cassie’s not picky.”

“Cassie can handle herself.”

I loved those sentences.

Then I married into another family and recreated the role.

Lucas listened.

He didn’t turn it into a diagnosis.

He simply said:

“I’ve definitely benefited from that.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Good.”

He smiled.

“You’re enjoying that.”

“A little.”

Christmas morning, we arrived back at Rosemary’s house at eight.

Not seven-fifteen.

Eight.

The kitchen was chaotic.

Miles was burning bacon.

Kara was fighting with the coffee maker.

Ben had somehow chosen a salad bowl for fruit despite three actual serving bowls being available.

Rosemary stood in the middle looking as though civilization had crumbled.

She noticed me.

“You’re late.”

I removed my coat.

“I know.”

Then she smiled despite herself.

“Coffee?”

“Please.”

She poured me a cup.

Did not give me an apron.

That was progress.

The casserole had survived.

The cinnamon rolls were slightly overdone.

Nobody d!ed.

Around ten, presents began.

Rosemary gave me a soft green sweater and a gardening book I’d mentioned months before.

She knew me.

That had never been the problem.

After breakfast, she found me putting plates into the dishwasher.

“You don’t have to do that.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

She paused.

I continued loading.

Then she laughed.

“Okay. I’m learning.”

Later, Kara sat next to me on the sofa.

“Mom asked me if I actually wanted the green room next year.”

“What did you say?”

“I want Mom to replace those awful pillows.”

“Excellent boundary.”

Kara lowered her voice.

“For what it’s worth, I think we all got accustomed to you being the person who makes things work.”

“That’s flattering for maybe ten minutes.”

“Yeah.”

She watched the children ripping wrapping paper across the rug.

“I should’ve noticed too.”

I appreciated that.

Not enough to transform the holiday into a group apology circle.

We changed topics.

Christmas ended.

Lucas and I drove home two days later.

Nothing about our marriage was magically healed because of a guest room.

But something small had become visible.

Lucas began asking before volunteering me.

Not perfectly.

A month later, his brother needed help moving.

Lucas said:

“Cassie has a truck.”

I looked at him.

He stopped.

“Let me restart that.”

Progress.

I had to change too.

At restaurants, when he asked where I wanted to sit, I stopped answering:

“Wherever.”

Sometimes I honestly didn’t care.

Sometimes I wanted a booth.

Turns out both answers were allowed.

The following October, Rosemary started the family Christmas group chat.

Usually she sent assignments.

This year she shared a picture of the bedrooms.

Then:

Before I arrange anything, tell me where everyone actually wants to sleep.

Kara immediately requested the green room with new pillows.

Miles wanted the blue room.

Grandma June still needed downstairs.

Lucas looked at me.

“You pick.”

I typed:

Lucas and I will take his old room together.

Rosemary replied:

Done.

Then another message appeared.

Breakfast helpers?

Nobody answered for approximately thirty seconds.

I laughed.

Then Miles volunteered for bacon.

Kara picked fruit.

Ben said coffee.

I wrote:

I’ll make cinnamon rolls with Rosemary.

Rosemary replied with a heart.

That was enough.

When we arrived that Christmas, our bedroom door had one wreath.

Two names.

Inside were two towels.

Two water bottles.

Two sets of slippers.

I stood there longer than necessary.

Lucas noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yep.”

“You sure?”

“Yep.”

This time, I meant it.

The next morning, I woke at seven-forty.

I could hear cupboards opening downstairs.

For years, that sound would have pulled me instantly out of bed.

Someone needed help.

Something needed doing.

Instead I stayed beneath the quilt for another three minutes.

Then I smelled coffee.

That was different.

I went downstairs.

Rosemary was at the counter rolling dough.

She looked up.

“Morning.”

“Morning.”

She nodded toward the coffee maker.

“Help yourself.”

I poured a cup.

Then she asked:

“Do you want to help with these, or are you only here for coffee?”

I took a sip.

“Coffee first.”

“Fair.”

She continued rolling the dough.

Nobody seemed disappointed.

Three minutes later, I washed my hands and joined her.

Because I wanted to.
