My mother called while I was reviewing a wedding schedule with my assistant.
“The florist is being impossible,” she said without greeting me. “He wants his deposit today.”

“Six thousand dollars. And your father forgot about the lighting invoice. Could you put that on your card too? We’ll reimburse you when the family investments pay out.”
They never reimbursed me. For five years, my parents had used vague promises about dividends and delayed transfers to turn my business into their private account.
I owned an event-planning company in Boston. I organized corporate launches, charity dinners, and private celebrations for clients who understood contracts, invoices, and basic gratitude. Yet when my parents called, I still became the eldest daughter who solved problems before anyone else had to notice them.
“I’ll handle it,” I said.

He understood immediately. We had worked together for years, and he knew which person had approved every invoice. “I’ll stop the order and send you the cancellation terms.”

I did not cancel the ballroom. My parents had signed for that cost themselves, and I had no intention of rescuing them from every consequence. But the food, flowers, music, lighting, and service staff belonged to contracts I had paid for.

The next morning, the calls began reaching my office line.

I looked through the glass wall toward the reception area. My mother stood near the front desk in a cream coat, talking sharply with the receptionist while several clients tried not to stare.
“It is not an emergency,” I said. “It is a bill she assumed I would keep paying.”
My assistant hesitated. “Should I ask security to escort her out?”
“Yes, please. Politely.”
Ten minutes later, my mother was gone.
Around four, a new number appeared on my screen. I nearly ignored it, but the message was from my youngest brother, Daniel.
Sarah, please answer. I’m not calling to defend them.
I called him back.
“Are you all right?” he asked.

He let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh. “The guests are arriving, and there is nothing here except an empty ballroom and a seating chart.”
I leaned back in my chair.

I waited.

Daniel was quiet for a moment after admitting that he had told Senator Collins the truth.

I could hear voices behind him and guessed he had stepped outside the ballroom. “How did he react?”

His apology did not erase the past, but it mattered because he did not ask me for anything in return.
