While my grandmother lay dying, my parents and sister never visited—not once.

My grandmother died with her hand inside mine and the rest of the family nowhere nearby. Her final breath carried seven words that would soon tear them apart:

“Look behind the family portrait after I’m gone.”

For six months, I had fed her, changed her bedding, taken her to medical appointments, and slept in a chair beside her whenever the pain became unbearable. My father visited once, staying eleven minutes only to ask whether she had changed her will. My mother sent flowers with the price tag still attached. My younger sister, Vanessa, never visited at all.
