Adrian tapped the page.

“Forty luxury units within five years.

Corporate retreats.

Membership packages.

We could triple revenue.”

“And destroy the reason people come here.”

“People come because the place photographs well.

We can manufacture that anywhere.”

Behind him, one of my employees inhaled sharply.

Adrian heard it and turned.

Several staff members had gathered near the barn: Mara, who ran guest services; Theo, our chef; and Luis, the carpenter who had helped me rebuild the first suite when I could afford only his labor and secondhand lumber.

“This is a private family discussion,” Adrian said.

Mara answered before I could.

Adrian scoffed.

“No,” Mr.

“It was a division based on character and preference.

Your father gave you the life you had repeatedly said you wanted.

He gave Claire the place she had repeatedly protected.”

The words landed harder than any accusation.

Dad had not dumped the farmhouse on me.

He had remembered every summer I spent there, every weekend I helped him mend fences, every conversation in which I said the land deserved another chance.

Adrian had wanted the city.

I had wanted roots.

The cruelty had come later, from the way my mother and brother treated the difference as proof of my lesser value.

“Open it.”

My mother closed her eyes.

Adrian noticed.

“Mom?”

She said nothing.

“If either beneficiary attempts through coercion, fraud, harassment, or misrepresentation to seize the other beneficiary’s inheritance, the trustee may revoke that beneficiary’s interest and redirect the asset according to the contingency schedule.”

All the color left Adrian’s face.

“You are saying Claire can take my apartment?”

“No,” I said.

“I do not want your apartment.”

Holloway nodded.

“The contingency beneficiary is not Claire.

If the clause is triggered, the apartment is to be sold and the net proceeds donated to the Hudson Valley Housing Partnership.”

Adrian stared at him.

Then he laughed once, too loudly.

“This is absurd.

I did not coerce anyone.

I brought a proposal.”

I picked up the folder my mother had handed me the day before.

“A proposal that gives you control of all revenue, authority to fire me, and the power to

negotiate a sale.”

“You were free to refuse.”

“After Mom told me I had seventy-two hours to surrender the property?”

“That was her wording, not mine.”

My mother turned toward him.

“Adrian.”

He ignored her.

“And this sign about unauthorized management access,” he continued.

“You planned this confrontation.

You are trying to make me look guilty so you can punish me.”

Lucas took one step away from Adrian.

The request had come from an email address associated with Adrian’s consulting company.

“That proves nothing,” he said quickly.
