He left the gifts in the reception area.

Sophie taught him how to calm down by counting slowly to four.

“Why are you taking notes?” Ethan asked.
“Because I lost too much by not paying attention.”
The visits weren’t perfect.
Sometimes Lucas refused to speak to him.
Sometimes Sophie cried when visits ended.

“Are you going to disappear again?”

“I can’t give back five years.”

That afternoon the company opened a new community kitchen serving six public schools.

When they cut the ribbon, the triplets stood proudly beside their mother.

One evening Sophie asked her mother,
“Will Sebastian ever be your husband again?”
“No.”
“Because he’s a bad person?”
Hannah thought carefully before answering.
“No.”

“He can become a wonderful father without becoming my husband again.”
Ethan hugged his pillow.
