My Son-in-Law Pointed at My Chair on Christmas and Said, “You Can’t Sit Here”—In the House I’d Owned for 31 Years.

“You can’t sit here.”

My son-in-law, Brandon Whitaker, spoke quietly enough that the children gathered in the living room couldn’t hear him, yet clearly enough to make everyone around the dining table go silent.

The seat he gestured toward belonged to me.

Not officially designated, obviously. There wasn’t any engraved plaque attached to its back.
