When my salary was raised to 12,000 dollars, my husband decided to hand every penny he earned to his mother.
“Starting this month, I am going to give my entire paycheck to my mom because you already make enough money to pay for everything,” Keaton said while putting more stew on his plate, acting like he had just said it might rain tomorrow.
I sat there with my spoon in midair, completely shocked by what he had just said.
That exact afternoon, I got promoted to regional finance director at work. After seven long years of working late on weekends, finishing audits late at night, and working even when I was sick, my monthly pay was raised to twelve thousand dollars.

A year later, Keaton came to my new home. He looked thin and tired.
“I know it has been a long time,” he said. “I have changed. Can we try again?”
I looked at him without anger.
